FIRST LADY HOSTS THE FIRST LADY OF GUINEA BISSAU

While His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma was in Lungi having consultative talks with some ECOWAS Head of States which included the President of Guinea Bissau the First Lady of Guinea Bissau Her Excellency Mrs Mariama Mane Sanha who accompanied her husband  to Sierra Leone took the opportunity to fly inside a United Nations helicopter to meet and discuss with Her Excellency Mrs Sia Nyama Koroma the First Lady Republic of Sierra Leone.

In her welcome address Her Excellency Mrs Sia Nyama Koroma indicated her joy for the visit of the First Lady of Guinea Bissau and added that she has long been yearning to share her thoughts on her projects with Her Excellency Mrs Mariama Mane Sanha.

She further discussed her WISH project which she reiterated was aimed at reducing the death of pregnant women while given birth and added that the initiative has contributed immensely to reduce the death rate of pregnant women and their babies.

Commenting on her complementing efforts on the promotion of the agenda for change of attitude Her Excellency Mrs Sia Nyama Koroma discussed the FLAXIS project which she said aim at changing the negative attitude of school children.

The First Lady expressed the desire to work side by side with the First Lady of Guinea Bissau.

On the sensitive issue of genital mutilation Her Excellency Mrs Sia Nyama Koroma cautioned that with time through education the people would understand the dangers of the practice but added that the UN was in the process of creating the awareness that parents must allow their daughters to reach the age of eighteen years before they can decide on their own volition to go through the traditional practice.

In response Her Excellency Mrs Mariama Mane Sanha thanked Her Excellency Mrs Sia Nyama Koroma for the warm welcome and added that she has traveled from home to another home which was Sierra Leone. She expressed joy to pay a visit to Sierra Leone for the purpose of sharing ideas with the First Lady.

Her Excellency Mrs Mariama Mane Sanha said she has been following the work of the First Lady and commended Her Excellency Mrs Sia Nyama Koroma for the initiative to address the health needs of the women of Sierra Leone and added she was impressed and ready to copy from the First Lady. She further reiterated the important role religious leaders could play in promoting the initiatives of First Ladies in the sub-region. Religious Leaders she went on were in a better position to create the awareness on the minds of the people on the dangers of some traditional practices.

After their discussions the First Lady Mrs Sia Koroma hosted Mrs Mariama Sanha and top women of the APC wing including the wife of the Vice President Mrs Kadie Samsumana to a lunch at the Presidential Lodge Hill Station in Freetown.
